Skim Coating and Patching Kirby Slabs Before New Floors
Thin floors show everything under them. A slab with old glue ridges, a crack from years of clay movement or a low spot near the back door will telegraph through sheet vinyl and can make plank rock and click.
Skim coating levels the surface. Patching fills cracks and holes. It is the least exciting part of the job and the part that decides how the floor looks in five years.
- Old adhesive and residue scraped down
- Cracks and holes patched
- Skim coat to level the slab
- New plywood underlayment where the floor calls for it
